• The Essential Elements book only teaches the D scale in the first few lessons
• It is best to teach scales by rote instead of using the book, this way students are able to work on technique, tuning and sound production instead of notes
• By the end of a students first year, they should be able to play the D, G and C one octave scales
• By the second year students should also know F and Bb
